7 Years & Counting

This past July 29th Dan & I celebrated our 7 year wedding anniversary. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been married for 7 years and together for 10 - time sure does fly by. . . I still remember my Dad introducing us at Waynesburg College on the day of our matriculation. I remember thinking to myself, “Man, he’s pretty cute.” My Dad followed the look of interest on my face with a stern, “Don’t even think about it – he’s one of my pitchers.” Little did we know Dan had other plans; during that same day (before we were even introduced) he was telling his friends, “I’m going to marry her one day.”

After spending the rest of our college experience (2 ½ years) being inseparable & then carrying on a long distance relationship, we got engaged in December 2004. Dan’s proposal was completely unexpected & a pleasant surprise . . . We had just returned to my parent’s house after visiting a few of our friends in Waynesburg; it was absolutely freezing outside & there was even snow on the ground. As I started walking up to the house Dan grabbed my hand & said, “Lets take a walk around the park.” I instantly said, “No way! It’s freezing out here” & dismissed his suggestion. Somehow he talked me into it & off we went. If you’re familiar with the Waynesburg College campus, you know that there are a line of 4 parks totaling a little under a mile & the last 2 are right next to my parent’s house. We only made it to the gazebo park before I started complaining that I was freezing & wanted to go inside; we cut through the park & started making our way back. During the holidays, the gazebo is lit by a dim, yellow spot light & it’s really beautiful. We decided to go in & sit for a few minutes – apparently all part of Dan’s plan. He then got down on one knee & after some very sweet & romantic words asked me to marry him. After some very long kissing (=P) we made our way back to my parent’s house to tell my family. My Dad’s reaction to the news: “It’s about time!” My Mom’s reaction: Crying. Ben’s reaction: Congrats, Sister!

We were married on July 29, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church, across the street from my parent’s house & the gazebo park. We’ve survived my move from Pennsylvania down to Virginia, adjusting to our roles as a married couple, home sickness, tight budgets, the purchase of Lexi, our move to our townhouse in Sterling, coaching schedules, sicknesses, heart breaking losses of family members, workout fatigue & stubborn tendencies. I can’t imagine being married to anyone else – he’s my best friend. Yes, we have our moments where we want to ring each other’s necks but those are very few & far in-between.

To celebrate our anniversary, Dan & I decided to keep it low key. We went to see the new Batman movie & after that we headed over to Lightfoot Restaurant in Leesburg, VA. We wanted to go to a place that we’d never been before & we heard some really good reviews from our friends. Here are some photos we took of our day/night:

Dan's attempt at taking our photo.

I'm always the one that gets the task of taking the pics.

Trying to get a good family shot is difficult...

I love this one of Lexi's face - Dan was holding a treat by the camera (LOL!)

This one will do. =)

Getting ready to head out.

Lovebirds.

Me & my Lexi.

He looks good in pink.

Alright, I'm going to let you in on a little secret - I love to be dipped. My favorite is being dipped on the dance floor & if it's during a great 80's song it can totally make my night. Below are Dan's attempts at dipping me while using the timer on my camera - I couldn't stop laughing...

Looking forward to the future & seeing what it holds for us. I love you, babe.

New Gear

Last month the new head football coach for Herndon High stopped by our house. Dan & I had no
idea he was coming until he called Dan & said, “Tell your wife to come out front.” After making a slight wardrobe change, I headed out to see him sitting in his car holding a small stack of clothes. Before he handed them to me he said, “Your workout clothes are entirely too bright & need to be toned down, so I got you these.”

[Three dri-fit t-shirts & a long sleeve windbreaker.]

I had to laugh because he’s always at the high school when I’m there doing Insanity & teases me about my bright workout clothes. I totally agree, they are very bright - but I love them. I have a lot of pinks, blues, greens, neon yellow, purples, etc. I like looking very girlie when I workout; I don’t want anyone mistaking me for a man. =)

I’m super excited about this new gear that he got me, not only because they say Herndon & I can wear them to the games, but because they’re all size small. Whenever Dan brings me home Herndon stuff he gets me a men’s large & the only thing I can do with those are sleep in them.

After reflecting on receiving the new gear & Dan informing me of the football season schedule, I realized that Brian was probably trying to butter me up because he would be keeping my husband from me for several hours a day, 7 days a week once football season actually started....well played, coach. Well played.

Wedding/Reunion

On July 21st Dan & I attended a wedding for one of our college friends in PA. TheTaylor/Kayla wedding started at 3 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church & it was a nice ceremonybut very warm – the church didn’t have any AC. =/ After the ceremony, we drove to the George Washington Hotel in Washington, PA where the reception was being held. The wedding consisted of Waynesburg College baseball alumni, most of them Dan played with. It was nice to see everyone & catch up. Here are a few photos that we took:

Before we left my parent's house.

At the reception.

Mahler, Dan & Schrader.

As you can see, the alumni have had a few drinks.

I wish I had taken more but when we got to the reception, it was absolutely freezing inside & I had no desire to run around & take photos of everyone. After a few drinks I began to warm up but by then all I wanted to do was socialize & dance with Dan. =)
The Sunday following the wedding I was able to hit the golf course with my Dad for some father/daughter time. I hadn’t been golfing for a few years so I knew I wasn’t going to do well. As you can see, I scored a 73 on 9 holes. =/

Yes, my Dad signed the score card telling me, “You’re going to want my signature in case I go pro.” We had a great time & even though we were a hot, sweaty mess at the end it was great to spend some quality time with my Dad.

Shoe of the Month ~ August

I've been trying to take my mind off a few things & I thought what a better way to do that then with a post about shoes.

This month I decided to go a different way. Since I've been doing Insanity now for a little over a month & will be starting a nutrition program after meeting with a nutritionist a few weeks ago (details to follow later) I'm a little more on the athletic track. I bought some new cross trainers this week because my Aasic running shoes really started hurting my feet, specifically my arches & the balls of my feet. After some research online I realized that the workout I've been doing should really be done with cross trainers, not running shoes. Go figure! I've never bought a pair of cross trainers & I'm really hoping they make a huge different in my workout performance - always looking to get better.
Dan & I went over to Dick's to check out what they had. I really didn't know what brand I wanted but knew that I wanted something girlie (of course)....well, you can't get any girlier than these:
Reebok RealFlex Transition Performance. Yes, I went with Reebok; the last time I bought a pair of these was high school basketball - maybe even middle school basketball. The bright colors were what first attracted me but once I tried them on I was hooked. The tread on them is fantastic for jumping (yes I was doing some Insanity moves while I was in the store) & they're so light. When Dan saw them on he even commented, "Wow, they look just like you." I'm so glad I found them & that I am now foot pain free. Bring it on Sean T.

Ben's Memorial

On Tuesday, July 31st, my brother, Ben, left our family to soar with the angels. He's no longer in pain, no longer has the burden of being trapped in an unfit body & is now at peace doing all of the walking& running that he wasn't able to do here on earth. We miss him terribly...every minute...but we know that he is forever in our hearts. As my Mom has been saying, "If we want to see him all we have to do is close our eyes."
A memorial service to celebrate Ben's life is scheduled for Sunday, August 5th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Goodwin Performing Arts Center located on the Waynesburg University campus. This service was planned to Ben's specifications & we hope all who are able to attend will be able to take a little piece of him with you. If you wish to read his obituary, it has been posted on Behm's Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers, we have been asking that a donation be made in the name of "Ben Humiston" to the Greene County Humane Society. Please feel free to visit their website [here] if you so desire.

My family & I want to thank everyone for their warm thoughts, prayers, condolences & gifts. Ben was an amazing brother, son & friend. All of the happy memories that we have shared/made will live on forever. Sister loves you Brother....
